Tenijah Hamilton: I'm Tenijah Hamilton. And from BirdNote, this is Bring Birds Back, a show about the challenges birds are facing, and the ways we can all lend a helping hand.
In season 3, I'm looking at ways people are looking out for birds, from online to Capitol Hill.
Maya Higa: People protect what they love. They love what they understand and they understand what they're taught, my role in conservation is the teaching part.
Tykee James: When we're on this side of the capitol, these are called House Sparrows. When we're on the other side...
Bird-Walk Participant:Senate sparrows.
Tykee James: Thank you.
[Laughter]
Tenijah Hamilton: I’m better understanding my own relationship with nature…
Peri Sasnett:I think it's really easy to see ourselves as separate, like, that's nature and we're over here. We are part of the ecosystem.
Tenijah Hamilton: …and the benefits of embracing it:
Deja Perkins:Your mental health is just as important as every other thing going on in your life. Because if your cup isn't full, how can you expect to be able to pour into others? So refill your cup!
Tenijah Hamilton: And I'm learning a bunch of fun stuff about our bird friends:
Kaeli Swift: For most westerners, when we think of crows and ravens, we have this really strong association with bad omens. But if we look across the globe the way that they've been used in mythology and creation stories can be quite different from that.
Wenfei Tong:I'm not just thinking, oh, that's an Acorn Woodpecker. If I know a bit about the birds, it's almost like seeing a friend or something and then thinking, “oh, I wonder what they're off to do today.”
Tenijah Hamilton: We've got all of that and more in 6 episodes for season 3. Our first episode is out October 19th, with new episodes each Wednesday. Subscribe to Bring Birds Back in your favorite podcast app, or listen at our website, BirdNote dot org.
