Deja Perkins: Hi, bird lovers. I’m Deja Perkins–
Purbita Saha: —and I’m Purbita Saha. We’re the season 6 co-hosts of Bring Birds Back! Starting August 21st, we’ll have a brand new episode for you every other week–
Deja Perkins: We have a lot to talk about, like how one community is using care and advocacy to bring their neighborhood birders closer together and how bird feeders are improving science and people’s mental health – at the same time.
Purbita Saha: We’re also getting into some super interesting discoveries from new ornithology studies. For instance, while many people think that only male birds sing, researchers found that 64% of female songbirds also carry a tune.
And while most migratory birds in North America spend a great deal of their lives in the Caribbean, Central, or South America, there’s far less understanding of their lives there.
Deja Perkins: I have to say, my favorite episodes are set in Chicago– my hometown! We dive deep into one of the deadliest buildings in the city for migratory birds: the convention center, McCormick Place. But as many Chicagoans know, this city isn’t all doom and gloom– Chicago is home to one of the most dynamic, diverse, community-centered birding groups we’ve ever come across. And we’re so excited to share it with you.
Purbita Saha: You’ll also hear from two of the top scientists studying and combatting bird flu at the moment. We’ll take a look at what the future may hold for birds and mammals– the good and the bad.
Deja Perkins: Seriously, this season has everything from why female wild turkeys roam in flocks to how regional bias has not only negatively impacted the lives of birds and those who study them– but the fight to conserve them, too. You don’t want to miss it.
