Gordon Hempton started a nonprofit that designates “quiet parks” around the world. These special places are to be protected from noise pollution, where you can experience true, profound quiet. On Earth Day 2019, the first Quiet Park was created on the Zabalo River in Ecuador. “There’s no other way to describe it: It is a living Eden,” says Gordon. “And when we listen there, we listen for miles. Not city blocks. We listen for miles.”

Sound Escapes - Zabalo, a Living Eden
Written by Mark Bramhill, Featuring Gordon Hempton
This is BirdNote.
Gordon Hempton is a renowned nature sound recordist who cares a lot about preserving natural quiet. And to do that, he started a nonprofit that designates “quiet parks” around the world. These special places are to be protected from noise pollution, where you can experience true, profound quiet. On Earth Day 2019, the first Quiet Park was created on the Zabalo River in Ecuador. It’s always been a special place for Gordon:
GH: There’s no other way to describe it: It is a living Eden. Traveling up the river by canoe, there’s no sign of road — no ... even noise from traffic coming from far away.
And when we listen there, we listen for miles. Not city blocks. We listen for miles.

MB: Gordon Hempton has spent his life recording the sounds of wild places like this all around the world, and you can hear extended versions of them on our latest series, Sound Escapes. You can find it on our podcast, BirdNote Presents, or at BirdNote dot org. I’m Mark Bramhill.
Sound Escapes was made possible by Jim and Birte Falconer of Seattle.
