Back when he was a bike messenger in downtown Seattle, Gordon Hempton was drawn to the sonic richness of a remote canyon in eastern Washington State. “Pipestone Canyon was my oasis from all the urban din and construction activity,” he says. The canyon walls echo and amplify the sounds of the animals that live there, “giving us dimensional information — what I lovingly call the ‘poetics of space’.”

Sound Escapes - Echos in Pipestone Canyon
Written by Mark Bramhill, Featuring Gordon Hempton
This is BirdNote.
Long before he was a nature recordist, Gordon Hempton was drawn to the sonic richness of a remote canyon in eastern Washington State.
GH: When I was a bike messenger in downtown Seattle, Pipestone Canyon was my oasis from all the urban din and construction activity.
MB: The canyon walls echo and amplify the sounds of the animals that live there — unlike anything Gordon had heard before.
GH: We don't just hear coyotes, but we hear the coyote wave as it passes through Pipestone Canyon and it gives us dimensional information — what I lovingly call the poetics of space.
Let’s listen...
[SOUNDSCAPE]
MB: Gordon Hempton has spent his life recording the sounds of wild places like this all around the world, and you can hear extended versions of them on our latest series, Sound Escapes. You can find it on our podcast, BirdNote Presents, or at BirdNote.org. I’m Mark Bramhill.
Sound Escapes was made possible by Jim and Birte Falconer of Seattle.
