Illustrator David Sibley and actor H. Jon Benjamin will face off in the bird illustration battle of the century during BirdNote's Year-end Celebration and Auction!
Imagine watering your garden on a hot August day, when a small yellow-and-gray warbler flutters into the spray and begins taking a shower. The Yellow-rumped Warbler, probably mid-way through its fall migration, is unafraid. Yellow-rumped Warblers use many types of habitat. They breed high up in conifers, often in small openings within dense, wet, coniferous forests.

Magical Warbler Moment
Written by Frances Wood
This is BirdNote!
[Yellow-rumped (Audubon’s) Warbler single “chip” notes]
Have you ever experienced a magical moment with birds? Perhaps a chickadee landed on a tree branch right next to your shoulder, or an eagle flew directly over you, so close you could hear its wings.
[Yellow-rumped [Audubon’s] Warbler single “chip” notes]
Here’s another magical moment. Imagine standing in your garden on a hot August day, watering some parched flowers. [Sound of running hose] After mindlessly holding a hose for several minutes, you see a small yellow-and-gray warbler flutter into the spray for a shower.
The Yellow-rumped Warbler, probably a migrating bird mid-way through its fall travels, is unafraid of your presence. In and out of the spray it zips, relishing the moisture. [Song of the Yellow-rumped Warbler]
For a moment, it lands on a nearby branch to fluff its feathers and shake away the larger drops. [Song of the Yellow-rumped Warbler] Then the warbler flies back to the spray, dancing through the shower of droplets again and again.
You stand in awe. What could be more delightful than offering refreshment to a worn-out migrating warbler that will return next spring to sing this song? ….
