Birding guides Victor Emanuel and Barry Lyon explore an old-growth forest with teenagers attending their camp for young naturalists. They study not only birds but also the habitats that support them. Barry and Victor are helping these young people increase their knowledge, make lifelong friends, and deepen their skills to observe birds and nature carefully. Victor says about the camp, "It's the best idea I ever had. I tell people 'It's the hardest I work all year and the most satisfying at the end.' And I just love seeing the enthusiasm of these kids. I wouldn't miss it. It's what I'm most proud of that I've ever done."

Victor Emanuel: “One thing about being in a spot like this, it gives you the same feeling you get in a rain forest, of being in cathedral…it’s a wonderful habitat.”
Let’s eavesdrop as birding guides Victor Emanuel and Barry Lyon explore an old-growth forest with teenagers attending their camp for young naturalists.
[Call of Pacific-slope Flycatcher and students moving through ferns in the forest]
Billy: “Ethan, is that Pacific-slope?” Ethan: “Yah”
Barry Lyon: “Not everybody saw this bird yesterday…”
Victor Emanuel: “What is it?”
Barry Lyon: “A Wilson’s Warbler”
Victor Emanuel: “Oh good! [Song of Wilson’s Warbler] This bird winters all throughout Central America in the mountains…”
Tiny Pacific Wrens also live among these immense trees, and the group is determined to find one. [Song of Pacific Wren - formerly called Winter Wren]
Barry Lyon: “Keep watching…they can come scurrying in like a mouse.”
Victor Emanuel: “It’ll be low.”
Barry Lyon: “Yah, just don’t move…”
Victor Emanuel: “Right there at the bottom of those sticks that are going down…There it goes, right! You see it? [Sound of girls seeing it] You’re right, it’s a Pacific Wren.”
Barry and Victor are helping eager young naturalists increase their knowledge, make lifelong friends, and deepen their skills to observe birds and nature carefully.
Victor says this about the camp:
