Birding 101: Bird Sound Vocabulary

Bird voices can vary tremendously. When you’re learning to recognize birds by ear, it can help to have shared vocabulary to describe how they sound. For example:

Some birds have clear singing voices, like this American Robin:

         [American Robin song]

The Scarlet Tanager’s song holds a similar tune, but this bird sounds a little hoarse.

         [Scarlet Tanager]

The word nasal comes to mind when describing the call of a Red-breasted Nuthatch…

         [Red-breasted Nuthatch]

…while the Brown-headed Nuthatch comes off as squeaky!

Other birds are so buzzy that they’re easily mistaken for insects, like this Grasshopper Sparrow:

Some birds sound almost mechanical — like the metallic song of the Common Grackle…

…and the simple, clicking notes of a Yellow Rail.

Then there are aficionados like Song Sparrows that mix-and-match tones in complex compositions.

Learning to describe bird sounds will make it easier to figure out who’s singing and to remember the voices of your favorite birds.
