José Carlos Nava Vargas is a Mexican journalist, educator, and researcher whose work bridges communication, social sciences, and public-interest storytelling. He is the author of La tropa del silencio, a narrative chronicle portraying the lived experiences of journalists reporting from one of Mexico’s most violent regions, and coauthor of ¿Por qué los mataron?, a collective work examining violence against the press and access to information in Mexico.
Based in Torreón, he is a news anchor and associate producer with El Heraldo Media Group, while also serving as Coordinator of Literacy and Academic Communication at Universidad Iberoamericana Torreón. His career spans journalism, higher education, and public institutions, including the National Institute for the Evaluation of Education (INEE).
José Carlos is currently pursuing a PhD in Social Processes Research. He received the Coahuila State Journalism Award in 2021 for digital media and is recognized for his contributions to academic communication and socially engaged journalism.
