Deja: We’re back with season 8 of Bring Birds Back, a podcast from BirdNote about the most pressing issues in conservation concerning birds, their environment, and our (human) lives.
I’m your returning host, Dr. Deja Perkins. And this time around, we’re talking about: innovative technologies for nighttime migration, important legislation that will affect both your local and visiting birds, plus – hunting!
Jerad Henson: The Federal Duck Stamp program contributes about $40 million a year in conservation dollars. And 98% of that actually goes into conservation on the ground. It's expensive to duck hunt. So generally, duck hunters have been fairly affluent, and they cared about a resource.
Deja: Funding plays a pivotal role in science today, especially with critical laws like the Endangered Species Act under review.
Hardy Kern: The way that the ESA is set up, it's to prevent us from needing to do a ton of investment in species later on. And those are the very things that are being attacked right now. We had Congress voting on bills that said this beautiful little bird does not deserve to be saved anymore.
Deja: But still, there’s so much good being done in the name of science, and there’s plenty more to celebrate.
J'orge Garcia: It’s just a lot of excitement about this new technology where we're able to monitor birds and monitor them live. I saw an opportunity to start working on a solution… And we've been able to build that.
