Introducing Black Birders Week 2024
Written by Nicole Jackson and Emma Brittain
Nicole Jackson: This is BirdNote. I'm Nicole Jackson.
Emma Brittain: And I’m Emma Brittain.
Nicole Jackson: We’re thrilled to announce that we're celebrating the 5th year of Black Birders Week!
[Applause, birds calling]
Emma Brittain: That's right! It's a week-long celebration with events and activities that highlight the achievements and contributions of Black birders, amplify their experiences in nature, and raise awareness about the importance of diversity in birding and conservation.
Nicole Jackson: This year’s theme is “Wings of Justice: Soaring for Change," which recognizes the historical and ongoing environmental injustices faced by Black communities, including disproportionate exposure to pollution and lack of access to green spaces for birds and people.
Emma Brittain: Stay tuned to BirdNote Daily for a week of shows produced by our organizers. You’ll hear about places crucial to Black people and to birds, learn how to participate in science projects through birding, and listen to our team members share knowledge from their fields of study. And don’t miss our virtual event on the impact of the heat island effect on summer birding this Tuesday!
Nicole Jackson: So grab your binoculars and focus in on the intersections of birds and justice during this special 5th year of Black Birders Week! Check out more details on BirdNote dot org about how you can participate. And make sure to follow us on social media for updates. Let's make this the best Black Birders Week yet!
