An April Fool’s Birdsong Quiz
Written by Nick Bayard
This is BirdNote, with a special April Fool’s Day quiz for you.
Only one of the birds we’re about to hear is real. See if you can tell which one, and let us know at BirdNote dot org for a chance to win a prize.
Here is our first bird:
[Call of the Gray Go-away-bird]
The Gray go-away Bird of southern Africa is smoky-gray with a tall, wispy crest. Favoring open woodlands and thorn savanna, Gray go-away Birds are known for their loud and nasal “Go-way” calls, often alerting other birds that there’s a photographer nearby.
[Call of the Gray Go-away-bird]
Here is our second bird:
[Call of the Green Treasure-snatcher]
The Green Treasure-snatcher of Ecuador is a large, ground-dwelling bird with a scaly head that almost resembles a box turtle.
[Call of the Green Treasure-snatcher]
They’re known for snatching jewelry and other shiny objects from travelers and hoarding it in deep burrows.
[Call of the Green Treasure-snatcher]
And finally, Bird number 3:
[Song of the Zombie crossbill]
The Zombie crossbill of eastern Europe is often observed plucking the brains out of grasshopper heads. Omega-3s and other fatty acids found in brains help Zombie Crossbills fuel up for their long journeys south each winter.
[Song of the Zombie crossbill]
