Science educator Chidi Paige was working hard preparing her students for the World Series of Birding. Chidi’s students were studying with the goal of identifying the most birds in the kid’s competition. And then something happened that made Chidi wonder if they were thinking about birds a little too much: one of the students began seeing a Rose-breasted Grosbeak in her dreams. The dream ended up having unexpected relevance in the competition.

I Dream of Grosbeaks

Mark Bramhill: This is BirdNote.
Science educator Chidi Paige was working hard preparing her students for the World Series of Birding, a competition hosted by New Jersey Audubon. The event has a category for kids, and Chidi’s students were studying with the goal of identifying the most birds in the kid’s competition. And then something happened that made Chidi wonder if they were thinking about birds a little too much.
Chidi Paige: One of my students, her name is Anna, started having bird dreams.
Chidi Paige: She came to me one day and said, "Ms. Chidi, I saw this bird in my dream. I have to identify it." And she started describing the bird and we started flipping through the field guide. It was Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Chidi Paige: I don't even think we'd seen that bird during our bird scouting trips. But funny enough, at the competition, the grosbeak was one of the things that we saw.

Chidi Paige: So we're like, “Anna, you dreamed up this bird for us to see!” It was just, it was just phenomenal.
Mark Bramhill: Chidi makes some delightful bird-ID related games to help make bird identification fun. You can learn about them on our website, BirdNote.org. I'm Mark Bramhill.
