Join BirdNote tomorrow, November 30th!
Illustrator David Sibley and actor H. Jon Benjamin will face off in the bird illustration battle of the century during BirdNote's Year-end Celebration and Auction!
In the season finale of Sound Escapes, acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton takes us on a whirlwind tour of nearly every habitat on the planet. From tropical forests to deserts to wetlands, you'll hear what the Earth truly is: music spinning in an otherwise silent space.
Thank you for joining us on this sonic journey. We hope each episode brought you a sense of peace during these troubled times, and that you have tapped into your natural ability to listen deeply.
And now, let’s listen to the music of the Earth.
Gordon Hempton: BirdNote Presents.

You're listening to Sound Escapes. I'm Gordon Hempton, the Sound Tracker.
In our final episode, we're going to listen to earth, our solar-powered jukebox.
If more sunlight falls at a particular place on planet earth on the plants, or as I like to say the solar panels, then it's definitely going to be rocking and rolling. It's those sunny days, those sunny seasons that most of the sound all happens.
The earth is music spinning in an otherwise silent space. It's not musical. It's music. I feel it. Just as I would sit and listen to a symphony and feel a burst of emotion whether it's, you know, passion and desire, happiness... all these expressions, all these human feelings come to me as I listen.
Our planet is truly sonically beautiful.
Today, in this whirlwind tour, we visit nearly every habitat on earth from tropical forest to deserts, we have wetlands, you name it.
As we listen to these different environments. Listen to how you feel.

Here at BirdNote. We hope you're staying safe and healthy. And that these soundscapes have brought you a bit of peace in these troubled times.
If we've done this right, something has awakened inside of each listener. That the world will sound different, that we will all know that we are born listeners, each one of us.
Sound Escapes is produced by Mark Bramhill and John Kessler. Ashley Ahearn is our editor. The BirdNote team includes Sally Bodie, Shelly Ellison, Ellen Blackstone, Katie Meyer, Rodrick Campbell, and Jason McCue. Graphic design for the season was by Jia-Yi Liu.
