In the spring, Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota bursts into song. For nature sound recordist Gordon Hempton, the greatest sound is the arrival of loons. A fond and venerable bit of folklore holds that loons mate for life. In their calls, Gordon hears true love. “It was full of commitment, full of inspiration, full of optimism,” he says. “It was so convincing to me that, if that is what marriage is about, I want a marriage like that.”

Sound Escapes - Loon Love Songs
Written by Mark Bramhill, Featuring Gordon Hempton
This is BirdNote.
In the spring, Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota bursts into life. But as the ice melts and wildlife returns, it’s the sonic landscape that catches your attention.
For nature sound recordist Gordon Hempton, the greatest sound is the arrival of loons. It is a fond and venerable bit of folklore that loons mate for life. In their calls, Gordon hears true love:
