Join BirdNote tomorrow, November 30th!
Illustrator David Sibley and actor H. Jon Benjamin will face off in the bird illustration battle of the century during BirdNote's Year-end Celebration and Auction!
We’re at the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, just 50 miles northwest of Nashville, Tennessee. It’s this massive inland peninsula, bordered by sections of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. It’s a sneak peek of Sound Escapes, our new podcast series.

This is BirdNote.
[dripping water and frogs]
We’re at the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, just 50 miles northwest of Nashville, Tennessee. It’s this massive inland peninsula, bordered by sections of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers that were permanently flooded as a part of FDR’s New Deal. The damming of the rivers submerged lots of little towns and farms and old family cemeteries. If you take a trip to the park and you have a boat, you can actually still see the ruins of some of the towns, deep beneath the surface.
But while humans changed this landscape, birds have claimed it - and they’re flourishing. The course of the rivers and the shape of their broad valleys funnel migrating birds here in the spring.
You’re listening to a sneak preview of Sound Escapes, a special podcast production from BirdNote. You can hear the full half-hour of Land Between the Lakes - and other episodes - at our website, BirdNote.org/soundescapes
