Looking out from a tall mountain on a clear day, you might be able to see for dozens of miles. Expansive, scenic views are treasured for their beauty — but what about being able to hear over long distances? For that, the ideal location is wide open prairie, like Saskatchewan’s Grasslands National Park.
This show is made possible by Jim and Birte Falconer of Seattle, the Bobolink Foundation, Idie Ulsh, and the Horizons Foundation.

It’s one of the least noise-polluted places in North America. It’s just you and the birds, as far as you can hear. Gordon Hempton has spent his life recording places like this…
GORDON HEMPTON: The auditory horizon // will easily be 8 miles in every direction. But under very calm conditions // it can easily be up to ten, if not fifteen, miles in every direction. So you’re listening to hundreds of square miles in a recording like this.

Gordon Hempton is also known as the Sound Tracker - he uses sound to better understand the world around him. And now, he’s sharing that gift with BirdNote listeners in a new podcast. You can hear the full half-hour recording of Grasslands National Park, as well as five other different landscapes, at our website, BirdNote Dot Org Slash Sound Escapes.
For BirdNote, I’m Ashley Ahearn.
