Wim Vader was born in Zeeland, the Netherlands, and studied biology at Leiden University. He worked afterwards for two years as a benthos zoologist at the Delta Institute in Yerseke, also in Zeeland. During a student excursion to Scandinavia, “he met this girl,” Sunniva, and they married, shortly after he had moved to Bergen, Norway. The growing family moved to Tromsø, Norway, in 1973. Wim has lived there ever since, apart from sabbaticals in Bodega Bay, La Jolla, Sydney, Cape Town, and Cork.
At the regional Tromsø Museum, Wim was a curator of “everything except the insects.” He was later also professor of zoology at Tromsø University. His special interest is the crustacean group Amphipoda. He has also published papers on most other groups of marine animals and land snails, as well as on birds (he worked 14 years on seabird biology). Now long retired, he still has a desk at Tromsø Museum and travels regularly on organized birding trips to exotic places. For many years, he’s written regularly on several email lists about the birds and seasons in Tromsø.
