Peter Hodum is an avian conservation biologist and ecologist. He is a professor in the Biology and Environmental Studies and Sciences departments at the University of Puget Sound. He is also a co-founder and senior program advisor for the Chile program at Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, a nonprofit organization that studies and protects imperiled ecosystems by centering communities in innovative scientific and artistic collaborations. Peter has over 30 years of experience in the ecology and conservation of threatened birds, with a primary focus on seabirds and island ecosystems. His research involves both locally based studies in Washington State, including conservation biology of Tufted Puffins and Marbled Murrelets and the ecology and conservation of birds in urban landscapes, and long-term projects on threatened birds and island ecosystems in Chile. Peter is committed to centering communities in his conservation work.
He received his PhD in Ecology from the University of California, Davis, where he also completed a post-doc before taking a faculty position at California State University, Long Beach. After four years at CSULB, Peter moved up to the shores of the Salish Sea, where he has lived for the past 20 years. He lives in Tacoma, WA with his wife and daughter.
