The Norse god Odin had two ravens that perched on his shoulders. Storyteller John Stansfield and his wife Carol share a song about the land of Odin. In the Land of Odin
Featuring John and Carol Stansfield
Written by Chris Peterson
This is BirdNote.
[Common Ravens “talking”]
Now it happened that the Norse god Odin had two ravens that perched on his shoulders. Every day, he would send them into the world, and upon their return, they would tell him everything that they had seen and heard. [Common Ravens “talking”]
Storyteller John Stansfield and his wife Carol, live in Larkspur, Colorado, far from the land of Odin.
In the traditional summer camp song the Stansfields sing, it’s not a raven but a little bird that comes to sharpen its beak on a mythic mountain…
[John and Carol sing refrains from “In the Land of Odin”]
In the land of Odin, there stands a mountain,
Ten thousand miles in the air,
From age to age, that mountain measures
Ten thousand miles square.
Once every million years, a little bird comes winging
Sharpens its beak and swiftly disappears, and swiftly disappears.
And when that mountain, it wears away,
Then to eternity shall be one single day
Shall be one single day.
What might that little bird be for you? What bird do you imagine flying through eternity?
