Years of experience in business accounting with her own clients led Lois to volunteering and then working with non-profit organizations. With this experience, she applied for the accounting position at Seattle Audubon where she was hired by Chris Peterson, who was the executive director at that time. In 2011, Lois was asked to help with BirdNote's accounting. She said that one of the most valuable benefits of working in the environmental community is that the appreciation of birds and nature has spread to her grandchildren and some have become avid birders. "It is a beautiful way to share with family and friends."
