BirdNote shows begin in many ways: a great listener question, witnessing a cool bird behavior, or a new scientific discovery. But there’s one common theme: curiosity. BirdNote begins with enthusiasm to learn more. In this episode, BirdNote’s managing producer Conor Gearin shares how one show idea came from seeing a Great Blue Heron far from water. By donating to BirdNote, you’re supporting the storytelling and bird facts you depend on, bringing more of the sound-rich stories you love.

Where Do Our Stories Come From?

This week, we’re reminding you that listener support makes this program possible. You can do your part by making a donation at BirdNote dot org. Listeners often ask us where our shows come from. Well, sometimes it starts with a great listener question, sometimes seeing a cool bird behavior ourselves or on social media, other times an exciting scientific discovery. But there’s one common theme: curiosity. BirdNote begins with enthusiasm to learn more.
Take this show about a Great Blue Heron:
[Michael Stein: This is BirdNote. … it might be a surprise to find a Great Blue Heron stalking across a field…]
[Great Blue Heron calls]
That show began when I saw a Great Blue Heron walking along a trail in a grassland. Though I’ve seen many herons, I’d never seen one hunting far from water. Afterward, I looked it up and learned that herons aren’t just expert fishers – they’ll chase rodents and crickets on land, too. Birds amaze me every time I encounter them, and I want to share that amazement with listeners like you.
By making a donation at BirdNote dot org, you’re supporting the storytelling and bird facts you depend on, bringing more of the sound-rich stories you love. Thank you for helping share the wonder and joy of birds. Visit BirdNote dot org today.
