Clare McLean grew up in Oregon, with fairly immediate access to nature. While living in New York City in her twenties, she began birding as a way to reconnect with nature and greenery. Her "gateway" birds were the Mourning Dove, two of which built a precarious but successful nest outside her Lower East Side apartment window, and the Northern Flicker, which entranced her with its unabashed yellow underwings.
Birding, photography, and writing are among her greatest passions; she combines all three in her blog birdwordgirl.blogspot.com. The roads between Cle Elum to the Yakima Valley in Washington State are her favorite birding destinations. Her cockatiel Lemon likes to sing along to the BirdNote theme song.
